Budget tips & discounts
Model railways can be an expensive hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s where experienced modellers find bargains.
Compare every offer
The same model can vary a lot in price between shops, and between several listings on the same marketplace. That’s why every model page here lists all the offers we know about, cheapest first, including multiple Amazon listings for the same model. Check the catalogue code matches exactly – a different running number or a DCC sound version can look almost identical in a listing.
Sale and clearance sections
Manufacturers and specialist shops regularly run sale, clearance, ex-display and “last few” sections. Our shops directory links straight to them where we know where they are. Newsletters often announce sales first.
Pre-owned and second-hand
- Many specialist shops sell checked, pre-owned stock with a short warranty – a safer bet than an untested auction lot.
- Older OO locos can be great value, but very old models may run roughly or have tension-lock couplings and wheels that don’t suit modern track.
- Ask whether a loco has been test-run and whether it’s DCC fitted.
- Track is often a bargain second-hand: check for bent rails, broken sleepers and corrosion.
Swapmeets, exhibitions and clubs
Model railway exhibitions often have trade stands and second-hand stalls, and swapmeets are packed with bargains. Joining a local club gives you access to experienced members, test tracks and sometimes members’ sales – and plenty of free advice before you spend.
When to buy
- Pre-orders are sometimes discounted, but you pay the price set at the time; production delays are common.
- Seasonal sales – Black Friday, January sales and end-of-year clearances often include model railway items.
- When a newer version arrives, the previous version of a model or set is often reduced.
Spend less, model more
- Build card kits for buildings – cheap, satisfying and they look great.
- Make trees and scenery from inexpensive materials; scatter goes a long way.
- Buy a smaller number of good locos rather than lots of cheap ones.
- Plan the track before buying it to avoid unused points and packs.
