Frequently asked questions

How the site works, how prices are shown, and a few common beginner questions.

Do you sell model railways?

No. RailTracks is a comparison and guide site. We list each model once, then link to the shops that sell it. You buy directly from the shop, and orders, delivery and returns are handled by them.

Why are there several offers from the same shop?

Marketplaces like Amazon often have several listings for the same model from different sellers, in new or pre-owned condition, at different prices. We list each one separately so you can see them all, sorted cheapest first.

Why does an offer say "Check price"?

We only show a price when we have a recent, checked figure. Amazon prices are only shown if they were checked in the last 24 hours, as required by the Amazon Associates programme; after that they switch to "Check price" until they are refreshed. Some offers are links to a shop's search results, where we don't hold a single price at all.

How are offers ordered?

Cheapest first, using the most recent price we have for each offer. Offers without any price are listed last. Commission never changes the order.

Are the prices accurate?

Each price is shown with the date and time it was checked. Prices and availability change often, so the price on the shop's site at the time of purchase is the one that applies. Always check the catalogue code, livery and DCC fitting match what you want.

Do you earn money from links?

Yes, some links are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, and other shops may pay a small commission. It costs you nothing extra. Outbound links are marked as sponsored.

Why aren't there real product photos?

We draw our own illustrations rather than copying shop or Amazon images. Click through to the shop to see real photos of the exact item.

What scale should I start with?

Most UK beginners start with OO because of the huge choice and easy handling. N fits more railway into less space, and TT:120 sits in between. See our guide to choosing a scale.

Can I use Hornby, Bachmann and Peco track together?

In OO, Hornby and Peco Setrack sectional track generally join with standard rail joiners and share common geometry for basic pieces, and Bachmann sectional track is broadly compatible. Rail height (code) and point geometry can differ, so check before mixing on a permanent layout.

A model I want isn't listed. Can you add it?

Yes, please get in touch through the contact page with the make, model and catalogue code.
